Native americans?

My son has family that lives on a reservation. He has a very native american bloodline. I would like to bring him closer to a knowledge of those roots since my side of the family has left those beliefs behind, being descendants of native americans themselves., namely Cherokee.

I am interested in how he might become more involved here in Cary, NC.

  1. Then, if he can prove that he has an ancestor listed in the 1906 Federal Census of the Cherokee Nation, (known as the Dawes Roll) he will be considered a member of the tribe. (See link 1)

To get him involved in the NC Cherokee Indian tribe, he will have to want to be come involved.

The second link I have posted might help with that.

  2. Which reservation is it?

I'm Choctaw, Navajo, & Cherokee, and I live in the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma (Durant). You and your son could probably do a lot of research about his tribes' culture, language, etc. Or contact the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma?

  3. you could google search cherokee

they should have an open site

the bloodline usually has to be 1/4 for them to consider you

&& from there you can see if they have any programs about native hertiage preservation

  4. Get him involved on the powwow scene. Make him a powwow dance outfit, and let him start powwowing with other native americans. There's lots of powwows in North Carolina on the weekends, and if he's part Cherokee as well, take a trip over to Cherokee, North Carolina. Very educational and fun.

    www.powwows.com for more powwow info.

    http://www.cherokee-nc.com/ for Cherokee, NC.

  5. You don't mention which reservation his family lives on, or what tribe.  If he is descended from members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee, and if he can show proof that he does, he will be eligible for membership in the Eastern Band of Cherokee as long as his blood quantum is at least 1/16.

You can contact the Eastern Band of Cherokee at:

    Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians

    Cherokee Council House

    P.O. Box 455

    Cherokee, NC 28719

    704-497-2771 or 497-4771

    FAX 497-2952

If he is NOT descended from Cherokee then you will have to contact the tribe his family is members of and do the same thing...

Note: Not all the Cherokee use the Dawes Roll as their base roll, the Eastern Band uses the Baker Roll...
