Native speakers in North America COME IN !!?

just curious about the pronunciation of "c"..

for example, "grocery" some people say /ɡrəusəri/, while some pronunced /ɡrəuʃəri/.

similar words like "divorce" "scotia"....

which one is right or both are ok? then, what's the difference?

  1. Both pronunciations of "grocery" are common although on the west coast, the former is more standard.  I believe the latter is more standard in the midwest (but I'm not certain).

    I have only heard one pronunciation each  for "divorce" (/s/) and "scotia."  I don't have the symbol for the sound in "scotia," but it's the one in your second "grocery."  I'm on the US west coast.

    Grocery is like Grow-Shur-ee

    Divorce is like - Div-ore-sss

    Scotia (as in NovaScotia) is S-K-o-sha.

    Different placements of the C make it a different sound. After an S it usually makes a K sound. with a E at the end it usually makes more of an S sound.
