Natural disasters in New Zealand?

Is it common for natural disasters to take place in New Zealand? If yes, how come? And what kind of disasters are common to take place?

  1. NZ is on the boundary of 2 tectonic plates.  It has a lot of earthquakes and a couple of volcanoes.  Anything could happen, but not much has happened yet.

    the bit about earthquakes i agree with (most are not felt) as i haven't ever experienced a big earthquake in the 24 years i've lived in NZ. the last major one was the edgecumbe earthquake in 1987.

    I would  say that natural disasters do not happen here "commonly" most of our volcanos are either dorment or extinct. mt ruapehu has had bursts of activity (i.e steam and ash eruptions) but nothing major

  3. Yes... Did you know that New Zealand has roughly 14,000 earthquakes a year. But most of them don't measure on the ricter scale and don't make the news.

  4. Hmm.. I wonder if there are cyclones there too, like with Australia.

  5. Losing to Australia in cricket.  Happens often.
