Natural sunscreens???

I'm trying to go organic 100% and was wondering if anyone knows of any natural sun protection solutions. I heard the coppertone, etc. types have harmful chemicals that are absorbed by the skin into the body.

  1. zinc oxide and titanium oxide are minerals that block the suns ultraviolet rays. the chemical sunscreens(which are in alot of sunblock or suntan lotions allow ultraviolet rays into your skin and do not protect you. i would look for those two that i listed above in my lotions.

i learned this from an aethestician and then i researched it for myself and found out that a very common sunblock that is in a lot of suntan lotions contain a compound that studies show allow a person to be more susceptible to ultraviolet rays. i don't know why they continue to use it though.

Oxybenzone is found in some sunscreens and it was found to be a photocarcinogen still used.

  2. I am in love with Burts Bees however go to sephora and click on their natural and organic section, they have so many options to choose from!

  3. the cheapest and best sunscreen that has been proven to work for thousands of yrs. is plain old mud.

  4. Well, this isn't anything you put on your skin but if you eat tomatoes regularly it helps. It has lycopene in it.

The ability of lycopene to block UV light is an additional benefit for the skin. However, lycopene has SPF of about 3, which is insufficient to protect from direct sun or any other harsh UV exposure. On the other hand, it is enough to reduce the effects of indirect sunlight or the sunlight that has passed through window glass.

  5. No bodycare product can be labeled as organic, simply because the USDA's organic program only encompasses food and products that are used to produce or grow it.

There are "natural" bodycare items however.  Look for something that doesn't have "parabens" in it.  Its a synthetic preservative used in almost everything that has been possibly linked to breast cancer and has been "outlawed" in Europe.  They will begin with the one of the following prefixs, -ethyl, -butyl, -propyl, or -methyl.  All are the same and should be avoided.

They do make sunscreens that use minerals instead of chemicals, so look for those.  They act as a physical barrier on your skin so the sun doesn't penetrate.  If you have dark skin however, you'll be able to see exactly where you put it because it can be seen.

Alba botanica is one brand, (but I believe they have parabens...) Aubrey organics (great line!!  I use tons of their stuff,) and Burts Bee's are all good brands to choose from.
