Naughty Dog built Uncharted 3’s aim patch based on user feedback, now live
Naughty Dog have released the long anticipated patch which will fix the aiming mechanics of their latest instalment in the action/adventure series, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception.
The game may have had praised heap on it, yet there were a large number of fans who complained about what they felt to were “sluggish” aiming controls. Many fans found the shooting in the game an unwanted challenge and struggled to cope.
It seems that Naughty Dog are serious about providing support to the game and its fans as they have released the patch, titled v1.02, which looks to resolve the problem.
The patch will add an “Alternate Aim Setting” which users can switch to better suit their aiming needs. The option can be found under the camera settings in the pause menu.
There is one catch though, as the Alternate Aim Setting only applies to the single-player campaign and will not carry on to the multiplayer element of the game.
Naughty Dog based the new aim setting on customer feedback as they invited a number of fans to their development studio where the invitees were asked for their views and played an active part in testing and tweaking the new aim mechanic.
The developer released the following statement on their blog, “Thank you for playing and your patience while we built and released this (1.02) patch.” Before continuing, “A lot of your feedback went into making this patch happen so keep letting us know what
you think of the game.”
The next statement also suggested that this was not to be the last time fan feedback would be considered in the development process of a patch.
“Continue to let us know in the forums of any technical issues you might stumble across. Hope you’re enjoying Uncharted 3! See you online!”
This is not the first time a developer has looked to fans’ reactions and tweaked their game accordingly. Guerrilla Games’ who are known for being the developer behind the popular PlayStation exclusive, Killzone series, have followed this model since Killzone
2.
The developer used the forums and each iteration of the update tweaked a few of the gameplay settings based on fan feedback. Naughty Dog, who are known to share their development techniques with other studios, seem to have adopted a similar model as well.
One can expect a number of patches to be released for Uncharted 3, though mostly more to tweak the game rather than fix it. However, the one thing everyone is looking forward to is whether or not Naughty Dog will announce any Downloadable Content in the
near future.
So far all there is on offer is a few Killzone pieces to customize one’s online character with.
More on that story as it happens.
