  1. A knot is a unit of speed.

A nautical mile is a measurement of distance.

a nautical mile is equal to 1 minute of latitude or 1/60th of a degree of latitude.

1 knot is the speed to travel 1/60th of a degree of latitude in one hour.

a knot is used in nautical and aeronautical speed measurement.  Could also be used as speed of wind, in maritime use.

  2. Yes a measure of distance and then speed.  So called because it used to be measured by throwing a log tied to a line with knots tied in it over the rail of a boat and counting how many knots went past in a measured time.  1 knot = 1 nautical mile per hour = 1.852 kph exactly, or 1 international knot = 1.1507794 mph
