Question:

Naval architecture and Ocean engineering?

This is a pretty specialized question, but...

I am looking at colleges and really want to become a naval architect. However, the schools that offer naval architecture degrees are ones I am not interested in attending. In fact I would be most unhappy going to any of them. However, some schools that offer degrees in ocean engineering are ones that I am interested in.

So i was wondering- Could I become a naval architect with a degree in ocean engineering? Could I make that career for myself without the actual architecture degree? or would companies hire only people educated with that specialized degree?

I know there arnt many people who would know these answers, but any info is appreciated.

  1. Perhaps if you e-mail SNAME they could connect you with someone who is thoroughly familiar with the field and job opportunities for specific degrees (including advanced degrees?).  As a mechanical engineering student (Co-op job at Quincy Shipyard) I attended their technical meetings (long ago!) at M.I.T.  Very interesting.
