  1. breast lines. Be sure to use spring lines too. I don't pay attention to which side of my vessel is against the dock, I point my bow into the current. I live on the Swinomish Channel in Washington State and the current usually comes from the south. It doesn't matter which way the tide is going. It has more to do with the height of the tide and the weather. Its very tricky trying to predict which way the current is going to flow. There is a river mouth near the south end of the channel that helps induce a northerly flow and when the river is high it intensifies the effect. There is also a narrow pass between two islands to the south of the channel that restricts the flow of water and helps it decide to go north. Still, it does flow both ways and brings logs from the river too! Especially in the winter when the river tends to run higher. Also since I have a large boat with a single s***w it's much easier maneuvering when you're pointing into the current.

  2. These are mooring lines which run from the bow and stern of the vessel to the dock, more or less perpendicular to the keel.

  3. You want info on your belly button?    OOHHHH  you mean NAVAL.   They are called the "breast lines".  Then you should have a "fore" and "aft"  line...one running ahead of the boat and one running behind at a 45 degree angle from the mooring pier.  Always moor the starboard (right) side to the shore.
