hi people,

i'm new to this nav/gps device stuff and i would like your input

what i want is friend user interface, clear graphic nothing too technical, $200 or less

so which brand is good?

i saw sony but not sure if its good for me although its a pretty good brand for a lots of stuff out there, kind of expensive too

what should i look for when buying a nav/gps device?

were there ever any incident where the device damage/fail due to the car heat in the summer?

reason i ask is that i live in texas and temperature are like 100s over here in summer.

your input is greatly appreciated, thank you

  1. Well the big top brands are Magellean, Tom Tom, and Garmin. Personally I prefer Garmin's since they use more up to date maps made by Navteq while Tom Tom uses Teleatlas. For a first timer though Tom Tom might be the way to go. Its very intuitive and you can get them for cheap.

A good model for your price is the TomTom One XL which has a fairly large screen.

As far as the heat is concerned I would remove the device everytime you park. Depending on where you live its usually not a good idea to leave your gps on the windshield. It's almost like leaving 2 $100 bills on the dash of your car.

The heat should be fine the device is rated up to 131F.
