Navistar LPGA Classic 2012: Four players to keep an eye on
The 2012 Navistar LPGA Classic is about to begin this Thursday at Prattville, Alabama, with several Ladies professional Golf Association (LPGA) contenders eyeing the prestigious title, but the limelight will be on the defending champion and top-10 stars.
American Lexi Thompson, who won the 2011 edition of Navistar LPGA Classic, has grabbed much of the attentions as she has vowed to win the tournament once again.
Despite her ambitions to repeat her last-year performance at Prattville, Thompson will not find it easy to beat her rivals who are also too fired up to surprise their fans and rivals.
Thompson, although not in the top 20 in Women’s World Golf Rankings, ranks among the strongest contenders for the Navistar LPGA Classic due to her experience of the field and course, and she will try to hamper Asian rivals from taking the title outside the United States.
Speaking to the media during her pre-tournament interview, the American star said she is glad to be back here, and will try to put her best foot forward in order to defend her title.
She said that she still draws inspiration from her last year’s victory at Navistar LPGA Classic 2011.
“Probably coming up to 18 was definitely the most memorable, but maybe 16 shot, the par 3 that almost went in the hole, I actually pulled it quite a bit and took the all the way down to the hole, but it was a good feeling to get that on my way in,” Thompson mentioned her performance at the 2011 edition of the tournament.
Current world number one Yani Tseng is also in the roster, which means that the match will likely turn into a tough battle. Tseng is keen to put her professional career back on track as the top-ranked prodigy has not been able to show her usual performance in most of the recent tournaments.
With renewed vigour and ambitions to end her brief victory drought, Tseng is ready to take on rivals when she tees off this Thursday at Prattville.
After a long struggle, South Korean Na Yeon Choi has managed to improve her game lately. Choi made the headlines after she won the US Women Open 2012, defeating Amy Yang by four strokes.
American Stacy Lewis can also trouble rivals at the upcoming battle at Prattville. Currently ranked third in world rankings, Lewis has won two LPGA titles in the current season.
