Question:

Navy A School transfer

I recently started IS A school and have found myself somewhat frustrated as it appears it'll be nothing like my recruiter told me about the job. And the instructors have reinforced that feeling when they explained potential duties and what i'll be doing. My question is what happens if I ask to get out. I believe they'll throw me in undesignated or at least so people have told me. Would it be difficult for me to strike for another job should I do this? I'm not really sure what to do here now, but the thought of being in a job i dont like for 6 years is worrying me. Thanks for any help anyone can provide. Especially from any current or former military who are familiar with this type of thing.

  1. If I'm remembering correctly, you can try to get into another rating, but it has to be one which is a higher priority need than the one you are currently in.  The guys who you can call in Washington DC for talking about transfers (I don't remember the title) are who could clue you in on this.  Your Chief could probably tell you a lot better info than I can give you.  You may be stuck in your current job for a while, but you might be able to get out of it.

I was training to be a Nuke EM for a while, but after I failed out of nuke school, I moved on to being a 9545(security guard) for about 3 years, then back to EM.  Good luck, man.

  2. if you are bored of Intelligence Specialist, why don't you go for some engineering rating? I am sure they can cross rate you to machinist mate for example...

ask a counselor, they can help

    good luck

  3. give it time

    you just got started

school is very different from the fleet

hang in there learn all you can. no matter what rate you have school and the schooling is very different from what its really like on a ship

my husband trained as a nuke mm and has said many times that the schooling was nothing like what it was in the fleet

  4. Here's the deal.  "A" school is not real Navy.  Do your best in school, get your orders to your first real command and then go with an open mind.  Once you get to your command and start doing your job you will see what it is really about and you will be fine then.  "A" school rarely has much to do with what you really do in the Navy.  IS is a great rate and you didn't make a bad choice at all.  If you try to fail out of school on purpose they will for sure send you to the crappiest/smallest ship in the fleet as a Seaman and you will be wishing you hadn't blow your only chance of being an IS.  You will go to the fleet undesignated and will spend a lot of time doing really dirty work and won't be too happy with yourself.  Your instructors are helping you much by not explaining the real life of a Navy Sailor.  You spend more time doing Navy stuff than IS stuff.  The REAL Navy is fun as h**l and once you finally get out of school and get to see the real Navy you will be a lot happier with pushing through the crappy training and making it to the fleet.  As an IS you will be exposed to some really cool stuff that nobody else will be.  The top secret stuff is pretty cool.  You can be stationed anywhere in the world and most of the places you can go other people would kill to go to.  I did over a year in ET "A" school and hated every minute of it and could not believe like you that I got stuck with such a job since it too was not what I thought but again the real Navy is awesome and I have never done anything they taught me in "A" school.  You cannot switch jobs so you get what you have.  If you get kicked out of school your only choice will be undesignated Seaman as I said.  It will take you at least 3 years to ever get a rating going that route and that also means not Petty Officer 3rd Class for at least that long.  You do not want to be in limbo like that.  If you hang in there you should be an E-5 within the first two years and that means, more fun, more money.  Stay focused and the better you do in your class the better orders you have to choose from.  Good Luck.
