Question:

Navy Corpsman Question...?

I was wondering how beneficial the training a medical corpsman receives is? Does this rate provide you with any preference in getting certain jobs as a civilian? ( fire fighter, Paramedic, etc.) I assume once you go back to school to get a degree in medicine your training will help you have a leg up. I was considering becoming an RN or LPN, once i am honorably discharged.

Any success stories out there from former HM's? I leave for RTC in December.

  1. The training is very beneficial, and certainly makes getting a job in the medical field easier once you are discharged. There are tests that you can take for college credit as well called CLEP tests. You can also take classes while you are in, and probably earn your degree before you get out, which can be even more beneficial to you. You can also attend "C" schools which can help you earn even more college credits towards your degree, a "C" school is a specialty within your rate and you can get a list of those from your career counselor once you are at your permanent duty station. You do not have to serve your full time at your duty station to be able to go to C school.
