Question:

(Navy) Delayed ship date for new spouse?

My fiance and I plan on getting married when he graduates from basic training. However, I was to ship just a few weeks after he was out. I heard that they will not allow the second spouse to ship until a full calendar year after the first spouse. If this is the case, we will postpone the marriage. Is the year long delay accurate?

  1. I kewn a guy who wife was is hawaii and we were in norfolk.  The miltary cares nothing for family. You probaly will spend your entire enlist away from him.  You can offer to extend your contact to be stationed with him, but then they may move him.  Wait until you are out first before you get married until you are do it for the money.

  2. no such rule.  you can ship whenever the heck you want.

the chances of being able to get married during PIR weekend are slim to none though.  ALSO getting married after you have entered DEP will CHANGE your status and may  delay your shipping on time.

  3. Where did you hear that??!!!

Both are active duty,  both are assigned to ships.   Neither Captain is going to put a hole in his crew roster just because one of his sailors is married to another sailor on another ship.

By your logic,   one of you ships...the other does not...Then when the first come comes back the second one gets shipped out.   Kind of hard to maintain a marriage when one or the other is out on a ship.   I would suggest you try to ship at the same time so you are both out to sea at the same time and then both back on shore at the same time.   If your statement is true,  ask for a waiver.

  4. You will both continue your current tours as normal (ie go when your ship goes without regard to your spouse).  You made a decision to get married while you were both on sea duty, now you have to live with it.

You can run a 1306 for co-location and for one of you to be transferred to shore duty, but it will take time. Most likely 6-9 months for the request to be approved up to BUPERS then for you to get new orders.

Of course, the 1306 has to be approved by the command and they have to agree to gap your billet.  That is totally up to your command and is only possible if you have been on aboard atleast 2 years.

If the 1306 gets denied, then you will have to wait for your PRD. When you detail, one of you can go to shore duty and the other will stay on sea duty then you will both flip flop between sea and shore for the rest of your career/marriage.

You will never both be on shore duty together.

sorry, went back and re-read the question......You are not in the Navy yet. no- you'll ship as scheduled. I have no idea why you think you would not. You might want to be prepared for both of you to be on sea duty for your first tours.
