Question:

(Navy) Reserve to active duty after only two drills?

Hello again military community! My recruiter has been helping me with my non high school grad status, and my supreme desire to serve on active duty within an amount of time that makes it impossible to go to college for the 15 credits. I've been taking FEMA Independent Study courses, but it's not guaranteed that this type of credit is accepted in my case.

He's told me that after two drill sessions in the Reserves, if I do NOT take the enlistment bonus, I can be released in order to be kicked over to active duty. Two doesn't seem like much, and we all know about how recruiters can "bend" the truth. Anyone out there with a solid response to this?

  1. Personally, I'm not putting alot of weight on what your recruiter is saying because as a Marine Reservist, I have lots of buddies who were trying to go active, and they have been trying for well over a year now, some almost 2 years. It takes a long time to make a transfer like that because the military is so slow about paperwork and things like that.

Two drills is only 2 weekends/2 months and I just find it hard to believe. Maybe he's trying to scam you out of a bonus. I would go talk to lots of other recruiters or at least people in the Navy Reserves and find out what's really going on.

  2. I am not sure what the recruiter is talking about in regards to transferring from the Reserve to the active duty Navy.  Two drill periods is only one day, not very long at all.

I do know that it was virtually impossible for a reservist to transfer to active duty a few years ago; two people in my reserve command tried to, but they were in rates that had low manning priorities.
