Other than their operation in water, what distinguishes them from the rest of the Special Operations? (Marine Recon, Army Rangers, etc.)

  1. Better than what?

Each branch his is special area of operations, its own function, and is trained to fulfill their specific missions.

SEAL's are in and out, usually clandestine. If you absolutely want it destroyed tonight, call the SEALs.

Force Recon are in there for the long haul.

PJs do it in the air.

Each has its mission. Each is best at its own mission.

The reason people think SEALs are "better" is because of the mystique surrounding them... they mystique and the legends.

Oh, and esduds must be a reporter inasmuch as his post is accurate but misleading. "Getting into the training" doesn't make one a SEAL. Making it "through" training doesn't even ensure you'll wear a Budwiser.

  2. Who says that Seals are better? Oh, let me guess SEALS and other Navy personnel. The fact is that each branch has their own special operations units. And each branch thinks they are the best. However, the true best of the best would be the 1st SFOD-D (commonly known as Delta Force) and by the way they fall under the U.S. Army. Having served with Seals, Delta, Rangers, and the Green Berets (Iraq 2003-2004) I can tell you they all have their own specific expertise. Seals are experts in a maritime environment, Rangers will get it done regardless of the environment, Green Berets are actually teachers first, and Delta is the most extreme of them all with expertise in each area to include maritime operations, airborne operations, reconn ops, urban warfare, LRRS ops, and terrorist eradication. Any more questions?

  3. A good publicist...

Seriously though, they are no better than any other Special Operations unit. They are better at what they do specifically, same with Marine Recon and the 75th Ranger Regiment, etc. Every unit has their own specialties and perform quite well both in and outside that realm.

It's a media thing... people generalize based on what they see on television. However, if you've spent more than a day working with these special groups, you'd notice that they're not better than one another as a whole, just better than each other at specific tasks. Ultimately, however, we need each other to complete many tasks that cannot be accomplished independently.

  4. Go through their training and you'll find out!

  5. actually nothing just they are more well known its harder to join Special forces in the army  air force special operations i believe is still the longest pipeline of all the units all together almost 2 years

Rangers are just tough and rugged they are hard i mean hard they can be at your back door reigning bullets in under a day and thats there job they are given some of the hardest missions they are given sometime bad guns and asked to test them in really hard missions

Delta have the hardest missions in the world and you will never about them they can walk around saying they are delta operators no real pride cause they cant brag about it i call them the best

SEALs i believe are the strongest members there training and stuff have to endure is unrivaled the weight lifting and swimming and stuff is hard and straining on your body so you have to be dedicated

all of them are hard but

Delta is the hardest and they sacrifice the most

    but the airline sucks lol

  6. Actually, if you look at the requirements for joining the Navy SEALS, you'll see that it is much harder to join the Delta Force for example. You don't need to have any previous experience to join the Navy SEALS whereas you need to be E-5+ and atleast 23 years old with at least four and a half years in service for Delta Force training.

To get into the Navy SEALS training all you need is to be in the Navy and volunteer.

  7. Ok, the thing that sets them apart is the selection course, it is 6 months, no one else comes close to that.

    SF- 3 weeks

Ranger- 3 week RIP, maybe Ranger School at another 3 months

    Delta- 3 weeks

    PJ- 10 weeks

    BUD/S- 26 weeks

As for the points about being better in some areas, the Rangers are great light infantry, the PJ's are great combat medics, the SF are great at being a force mulitplier and Delta along with the Navy CT team are the elite at that-Counter Terrorism (CT) and are the top tier units we have. The difference is that no one can do as many things as the teams can do as well as they do. The big problem they have is that they often forget the basics because they believe there own hype and press, gets them into trouble all the time. If you want an honest look at things, here:

    CQC- SEALs, Delta

    SOUC/MOUT-SEALs, Delta

    RECCE-Delta, Recon

Maritme-SEALs, Recon (Includes VBSS, Diving, Etc..)

    CT-SEAL CT and Delta

    CSAR-PJ's, SEALs

    FID-SF, MARSOC

Land Warfare-this is where I think it is tough to say, small units I would give it to the teams, big I would give it to the Rangers, might change down the road though with MARSOC coming on line.

Finally, even the Flags in OEF said that no one was as flexable as the Teams were, they are not perfect, they are not super soldiers but they are guys trained across the board and they do have a better selection process overall.
