Navy loses to Army in straight sets – Volleyball News
Women’s volleyball squads from Navy and Army came face-to-face in an interesting encounter on Friday, November 4. The Wesley A. Brown Field House in Annapolis set the field of play for a great volleyball scrimmage, where Army stole the show by making a clean
sweep over their opponents. The Black Knights (Army) worked out a wonderful performance and posted 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 25-13) on board, in order to send Midshipmen (Navy) to defeat. Army recorded magnificent .300 hitting percentage in three-set match and proved
its metal.
Black Knights started out well with a great combination of solid serves and strong hits. They attempted convincing attacks and put some early pressure on the opposite side. Navy’s team fought back and narrowed the gap of points but Army came up with better
strategy and remained ahead in the game. First set ended with the final score of 25-17, while Army was on the winning side.
After dropping the opening set, Navy bounced back with a strapping start to the second set. They learned from their mistakes in the first frame and covered their flaws. The Mids picked up lead at 8-6 and quickly converted it into 16-10. Black Knights struggled
to catch up with Navy and lessened the margin down to two points at 16-14. Nonetheless, Navy maintained the advantage up till 22-19. Eventually, Army outscored Navy with powerful pokes and extended their lead to 2-0 by winning second set, 25-23.
Despite making a good start in second set and putting a lot of effort, Navy failed to prove its endeavours against Army. On contrary, Black Knights enjoyed a great rhythm and tone after winning two consecutive sets. They jumped to 6-point lead in third set
and dragged Navy under huge pressure. The Mids could not overcome the strong opposition and ended up slipping another set from their hands. Army captured third set with 25-13 and announced match victory.
The mentor of the losing side, Larry Bock, stated after the match, "Our players played hard. We had some remarkable stretches where we played as well as we have all year, but there were not enough of them. Army is a terrific team."
Furthermore he appreciated the enormous support of fans and expressed delight about the good turn-out.
On the other hand, Alma Kovaci, the head coach of Army shared her thoughts in the following manner: "I was proud of the team's performance tonight. Playing Navy and all that comes along with the service academy rivalry is intense and something I am happy
we were able to handle. We need to carry this momentum into tomorrow and the rest of the Patriot League regular season."
