Question:

Navy question about free time on ship?

I have a friend in the Navy and he said that he's going to be on ship again in a week. When you go on ship again, do you normally have more or less free time than you did when you were stationed somewhere? Or does it just depend on what you do?

  1. Depends if you are underway or deployed and the job they are doing.  While underway most people work about 16 to 18 hours but during that time there is time for breakfast, lunch, dinner, working out and relaxing to a degree.  Sea duty is way better than shore duty any day.

  2. if he is underway, his days will be 20 hours long.

  3. depends on your rate.  I was on aircraft carriers and was squadron, so we worked 12 on 12 off seven days a week while underway.  Other specialties have different working hours and time off

  4. Yes, this does depend on your rate but when underway the days can be long 12 hours + and there isn't anything to do anyways. When stationed at a shore duty posting, expect the hours to be less but it is also at the needs of your command at that time.

PS Sea Duty being better than shore duty is a matter of opinion. My shore duty was in Sicily and I loved it.
