Question:

Navy question--swimming?

When you join the Navy they teach you how to swim.. My question is what TYPES of swimming? I am a very bad swimmer & this is my only fear is that I won't be able to learn to swim, specifically the underwater swimming. Thanks so much~Candra

  1. The Navy gets this problem all the time. They will teach all of the basic strokes, that is your crawl, back, side-stroke, breast stroke, and probably elementary back. If you can't hold your breath, then the side-stroke is probably your best bet. You are literally on your side and it is very powerful. I am a BSA trained lifeguard and that is our main stroke. Red Cross is the same way. It is a great rescue stroke. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. I have both IM and Email.

The Navy will teach you everything you need to know.  Mainly they'll teach you breaststroke, sidestroke, elementary backstroke, and how to float.  The instructors that I saw seemed to be competent and will do what it takes to get you past the swim test.  You would be amazed at the number of people who join the Navy and can't swim.  You should also talk to you recruiter (but be wary of any promise they make you).

  3. My mate who is in the Navy is a terrible swimmer and has had no problem with it there - you'll be fine!
