are there certain positions that dont get deployed as much? like should i expect him to be gone for a while? his brother just got out of school and was assigned to ship that hasn't even been built and his dad has only been away 4 times on 6 month deployments in his 20 years of serving...but i here other stories about them being in sea for 8 weeks, coming back for 1, going out for 4 , coming back for 2. ..so i don't know

  1. Hi. CS (cook rating in the Navy) is a good job, but he will get stuck in the galley, serving, washing dishes, cleaning and he will be assigned to a carrier at sea. He has sea duty and shore duty and he has to do several months doing both. There is a limit to this.

There are other jobs that are somewhat sea based, like BU but if requested they are being sent to the Middle East.

My best advice to you, go to http://www.mynavyonline.com Im KJC88 there, have your boyfriend join too and you too. Ask your question(s) there. We are retired, active sailors who know a lot about the Navy and give professional and accurate advice. Rather than these Yahooians who give a lot of their opinion advice or what they have heard.

    Good luck!

  2. plz to help me, i ask question but yahoo no post. plz to tell the bush

    i am hostage to yahoo.

  3. Everyone in the US Navy gets a dream sheet.

I only climbed to E6 during my career.

As a retired E6 I do okay. Go in and even if your job sucks, invest.

Invest big time, and when you get your 20 year pension, you can be fully retired.

    I did.

  4. It will depend on what command he get assigned to.  All positions in the Navy can go on deployment, that is part of being in the military.   Yes as a cook he can be assigned to a ship that does go on deployments.  They can be for a few days, a week, a few weeks, a month, a few months, or over 6 months.  It will depend on what workups, exercises, etc.. that they are doing.  one year they can be out 90% of the year and then next year 60%.  The chances of him going to a Precom ship as a cook is possible but most likely not because they need to have a Galley that is working.

Single and married can get a dream sheet whether or not they get it though is another question though.  Usually the people that get the highest marks get the first picks then it goes down from there.  It also depends on the Navy's needs at the time.  One time it could be all East Coast openings, another time West Coast, etc.. He does have a chance to be stationed Overseas yes it is definite.

  5. As a cook, he will be stuck on the gally if he gets deployed, as for finding a job that doesnt get deployed that much, there really isnt one that does or doesnt, it all luck of the draw. Also, about the dream sheet, he will still get a dream sheet, but, 99% of the time you wont get what you wrote down, and you never ever get to choose where you get stationed unless you have certain stipulations, or for example, if his job is only available at one command, then he would get that command, no matter what, and sorry to say, cooks as well as every other job the navy has, are needed everywhere, so there is really no telling where he will go.
