no criminal background, no repos, no foreclosers, but im sure my credit score is not good. i was turned in to collections for a small med. bill that is now paid. i have partied some money away in the past. i dont have a large amount of debt < 5,000.. most jobs i would like to persue in the navy require a secret clearance, do you think i could get one??? and is there something they look at the most i.e. criminal, credit. ( do only those with execellent credit get the clearance)

  1. As long as you are up front about the credit issues than you should be fine. I've worked with a TS (top secret) for a while, and I work in a building where everyone must have a TS, so I've had the opportunity to see how this works. Normally, you'll get the clearance as long as they see it is not a habitual thing. It might take a little longer to get the clearance, but you SHOULD be able to get it. Just do not try to hide anything, and be able to have a good explanation for the things they do find or ask about. FYI, a Secret clearance isn't nearly as hard to get. Just be honest and you'll be fine.

  2. Credit is the number one reason security clearances don't get approved. If yours is bad, you probably won't get it.

  3. you will be fine!

  4. Secret, no problem.

Top Secret and higher, most likely okay but there will be an investigation and you have to explain things at an interview.

  5. They are mostly concerned with criminal stuff. Even the stuff you have been told is not on your record, they will see it.
