Neatherlands or Holland??

Question

why do we call it neatherlands in America and dutch people call it holland if its called Holland wouldn't dutch people be called hollanders or something ??????

The name Holland comes from a long time ago, when the western part of what is now the country the Netherlands was a Duchy, mostly independent although always under the rule of a king far away, like Spain.

Later the country became one, independent from other countries, so a name came became official that had been used locally, De Nederlanden, (mostly translated as the Netherlands.)

A few developments later, the official name for the country is Koninkrijk der Nederlanden, and the part in Europe is mostly called Nederland. (Single, not plural!)

Holland did stick to the country as nickname, as the best known part of the country, and the part with the most people.

But it is only a nick name now.

And it is the name of two of the twelve provinces, Noord Holland and Zuid Holland.

So to call it Nederland (or the Netherlands) is the proper thing.

The right way to name the people in our own language is Nederlander, but we accept the name that stuck in English, Dutch, although not all of us like it.

Nederland or Netherland means the land under sea level. That's why they have a lot of big dams there.

Holland is a region in the western part of the Netherlands. A maritime and economic power in the 17th century, Holland today consists of the Dutch provinces of North Holland and South Holland.
