Nebraska Cornhuskers’ Bo Pelini in hot water with school chancellor
Nebraska school chancellor Harvey Perlman has made it clear that he is was not happy with Cornhuskers' head coach Bo Pelini’s actions during the club’s loss to the Texas A&M Aggies on 20 November.
Pelini berated officials throughout the Cornhuskers 9-6 loss to the Aggies in their week 12 engagement. The game was broadcast on ABC and there were several shots of Pelini shouting at officials. In addition, Pelini was also visibly upset with freshman quarterback
Taylor Martinez, raising his voice at the youngster on the sidelines.
“Bo has a lot of passion for his football team,” Perlman told the Associated Press, “and there is a strong upside to that. But, again, overall, the conduct was unfortunate last night.”
Perlman mentioned that Pelini would be spoken to by himself and the university's athletic director.
Pelini was incensed with the Cornhuskers' inability to generate offence, and the officiating, which led to 145 yards in penalties, seeing the club reprimanded 16 times in the match-up. It is unclear why Pelini was mad at Martinez specifically, but Perlman
maintains that it was unfortunate that it had to happen during a nationally televised game.
“There is a part of the culture of intercollegiate athletics that involves coaches talking strongly to players,” Perlman added.
Pelini is known for his harsh treatment of officials, but was likely more riled up than usual, as the Cornhuskers were only one game away from clinching the Big 12 North. The club is now tied with the Missouri Tigers at the top of the Standings and will
have to win their final game of the year against the Colorado Buffaloes in order to have a shot at the Big 12 title game.
The Cornhuskers meets the Buffaloes at home on Friday 26 November.
