Nebraska Cornhuskers’ Taylor Martinez suffered ankle sprain
Nebraska Cornhuskers quarterback Taylor Martinez suffered an ankle sprain when his team took on the Missouri Tigers in week nine action, and not a bruised bone as was originally reported by head coach Bo Pelini.
Martinez was forced out in the second quarter against the Tigers on 30 October and was replaced by last year’s starting quarterback Zack Lee. The ‘Huskers went on to the win the game 31-17, recording their second straight win over a ranked side.
Pelini does not think that the injury to Martinez is serious and although the freshman did not practice with the team on Monday 1 November, he is expected to be back with the club this week and should make the start in week ten when Nebraska takes on the
Iowa State Cyclones.
The Cornhuskers suffered a loss to the Texas Longhorns on 16 October, which was the first of the season, and it looked as though they were destined to drop down the Bowl Championship Series standings. However, Nebraska has turned their game around quickly,
defeating the Oklahoma State Cowboys in week eight and making quick work of then sixth ranked Missouri in week nine. The two victories helped Nebraska push their way into seventh spot.
The loss to Texas confirmed that the Cornhuskers would not be playing for a national title. However, their recent string of victories and their ranking in the BCS standings means that they are likely to play in an important bowl game.
The Cornhuskers will be at Iowa State on Saturday and will have to face-off against the Cyclones without cornerback Alfonzo Dennard, who is expected to be out after sustaining a concussion in a collision with teammate Courtney Osbourne.
Martinez has had a strong first season with the club, tossing for 1,161 yards and 9 touchdowns, while recording over 100 yards on the ground five times.
