  1. It's a piece of neoprene or some other fabric. You wrap it around the entire neck of the horse and leave it "sweat" the fat off the crest of the neck.  You can also just watch your horse's diet and excercise. A "cresty" neck is a health risk. It indicates obesity which can lead to founder, and other problems associated with a horse being overwight.

  2. These are neck sweats.

They are used to sweat off the extra fat on a horses neck. They are mostly used for halter horses and for taming unruly manes.

  3. is it something simmilar to a hood or sleezy?

  4. a neck sweat is ussually a neprenne piece that is trianglur in shape. the purpose is to help tighten up the neck are. the best way to describe them in human terms a girdle for the neck area.

  5. Neck sweats are things put on the horses neck to make it skinnier. Have you ever seen those retarded looking arabs with the ludicroulsy skinny necks? Well that is the result of a neck sweat. They make the horse sweat and get all hot. It is like when people go and work out with five layers of clothes on to get skinnier. Stupid, I know.

  6. Don't like them.  In the wrong hands you can burn your horse.  Used one many years ago, doing the show thing and now my horse is allergic to neoprene.  And that was the first and last time I would ever do that to my horse!  It's a fast way to define the neck area or body.  They also have body sweats.   Most people do it for halter classes.  Halter classes are about confirmation, either your horse has it or it don't ---naturally!!!

  7. The other users have stated that it is used to sweat the fat off a horses neck, and while this is true, the neck sweat was not intended for a health aid.

The Neck and throat sweats were actually intended to relax and sculpt the neck, especially in mares who don't develop the underlying muscle tone as fast as a gelding or stallion. Different sweats serve different purposes. There are rollers which are intended to help knife necked, swan necked, and ewe necked horses developed and bulk up MORE muscles.

Then there is the regular or jowl neck sweat which is intended to sweat out the jowl and area around the poll to give the head a more "clean" appearance. There is the full neck sweat, which is popular for mares, bull necked, and heavily crested horses. It helps sweat out the fat and while used during daily activities it will help lengthen, relax, and sculpt nicer, firmer necks. There are also combinations of a full and jowl sweat. Which combines the two purposes in one. Most people who use neck sweats combine wearing it with light work on the long line. It is beneficial not only for cutting back the fat but for the beauty of the horse.

And don't get confused. The crest should never be a target of any problem as it is a trait in some breeds. But in the breeds that it is not a trait in could be a sign of cushing's or laminitis. While the crest is not the problem, the fat that is behind the forming of it IS.
