i have pain in the back of my neck. its really bad at night and when i wake up i cant even lift my right arm to brush my hair. tylenol helps only a little. does anyone know what might be wrong. it came on gradually. i had a stiff neck for a week and now it has become worse. i would appreciate any opinions before i go to the doctor.. they treat everything with pain medicine, which i cant take because it makes me vomit. and i run 4 miles everyday and stretch for 10 min. before and after..thanx

  1. I had this happen and it was a pulled neck muscle. Obviously you use those muscles all the time so resting it is hard. I used ice on it and that helped but it took a while for me to feel better.

  2. consult md

  3. IT sounds like you have pinched a nerve.  Sometimes the nerves around your spine and neck will get "caught up" in your vertebrae and get pinched.  This causes a good deal of pain.

If it is still pinched, then they'll probably send you to a chiropractor to try and manipulate your spine to unpinch your nerve.  They might prescribe you pain medication, but obviously you do not have to pick up the prescription.  That is your choice.  Pain medication also makes me ill and I never take anything more than tylenol.

  4. sounds like a heniated disk, most can be fixed with out patient traction, and physical therapy. some need to be operated on. see a nuro sergeon specialist.

  5. it helps to ice it then us a heating pad. do this in 20 minute increments.
