how are neclear power stations different from coal powered stations?

  1. The difference is the source of the heat - and the potential health risks - and the availability of the fuel.

    Coal: Burn coal, heat water, make steam, turn generator, make electricity.

    Nuclear: Provide critical environment for nuclear fission reaction to heat water, make steam, turn generator, make electricity.

    Coal: lots of carbon based emissions that people associate with "greenhouse" gasses and global warming and acid rain and unhealthful air quality.

    Nuclear: no carbon based emissions and no so-called "greenhouse" or global warming effects. Nuclear has by-products with long radiation half lives that pose potential health risk hazards and post-use containment issues. Also a risk during operation of unhealthful release of radioactive particles.
