Question:

Ned to replace a wired home lighting switch with a wireless remote switch?

I have a hard-wired lighting switch in my kitchen that controls an overhead fluorescent light. I'm getting a new refrigerator that will block access to the switch. Rather than move the existing hard-wired switch I'd like to install a receiver in the existing switch box and install a (battery-powered?) remote switch somewhere more assessable. Can anyone recommend suitable hardware to accomplish this? Please keep in mind I'm working in a 60 year old building: also, I'm somewhat handy but no electrician. Thanks in advance for your help.

  1. I did that using stuff from www.x10.com but a) I have no idea if they're even still in business, and b) I think they sell that type of stuff at hardware stores these days.

However, I will say that in my setup, it would work if I had an incandescent bulb in the fixture, but not if I had a compact florescent.  Maybe my unit was just bad, or maybe they've fixed that in the...8? years since I bought it.
