Nederland’s Thierry Schmitter snatches overall lead at 2012 IADS World Championships: Day 2
Nederland’s Thierry Schmitter was impressive on Charlotte Harbour waters as he snatched the overall lead of the 2012 International Association for Disabled Sailing (IADS) World Championships after showing some scintillating form on the second day of the
event. The Dutch made his way to the top after clinching a bullet and some higher scores during his event run.
Schmitter had a slow start to the second day’s races and was trailing the first day leader, Canada’s Paul Tingley. Schmitter clinched a bullet and a second place to secure his top podium place with 16 points overall. On the other hand, Tingley was not able
to repeat the first day performance during his run on Day 2 and tumbled down to second position with 20 points after scoring a fifth and thirteenth finish.
The winds on day 2 of the 2012 International Association for Disabled Sailing World Championships were quite steady and kept blowing up to 14 knots over the racing area at Charlotte Harbour. After a while, the winds started wafting around with a 20-knot
speed but despite the challenging conditions, the fleet was able to complete the scheduled races.
First race of Day 2 commenced under ideal winds. Schmitter was confident on the race course but due to a slow start, he managed to hit the second spot after America’s Mark LeBlanc, who secured first place in Race 1 with the help of some impressive tactics.
Second race of the day was completely dominated by the Dutch sailor from the beginning to the finish line.
