Question:

Need Advice On Buying Food?

I'm in college my senior year, the housing I chose this year is still on campus but a little bit away from campus. I have a 400 dollar refund for my fin aid package from school.

The thing it it really is cheaper to buy food and learn to fix stuff myself then to go on a campus plan. The smallest plan is 600 per semester. I 've had that for the past two years. The thing is breakfast would cost me 6.25 and dinner 8.25 to eat at the campus food places. When I can buy 2 boxes of store cereal for 5 dollars or about 3 box of poptarts. Dinner at a store I could buy like soup and frozen dinner for 10 for 10. So really it is cheaper to buy the food myself.

What I'm wondering should I put a little amout for food like 200, so 200 will be seperated from the refund and I still get 200 back. And just buy the rest of my food. Because I'm not going to want to walk that long distance to get breakfast , lunch or dinner.

Any advice or suggestions.

  1. If you get 400 then make a good grocery list and go buy that much food, you will need it for some other time. 400 dollars is my grocery budget for a month for a family of 5. And really dont try project payday, unless you plan on buying alot of stuff that you really dont need.  Have you ever seen the store gift card offers, or free laptop offers, and you have to take  an endless survey???? That is what project payday is.  And you can't just "buy" the stuff and call and get a refund as soon as the other person pays you.  You have to give the item a try or others will not hire you to do it.   A big scam!!!!! I know because I tried it.  You get paid to take a survey, you have to fulfill all these obligations which means trial offers etc that you cant just cancel, that means money coming out of your account.  I meant to give that person who told you about project payday a thumbs down, but accidently gave it a thumbs up.

  2. Meals during your college-life can be boring. I know. It's very smart that you have considered alternative food options so that you can save some money. I think you should use that 200 and go to a grocery store and buy cereal and milk for breakfast. And maybe sandwich material and chips for lunch. For dinner, you can probably buy a good amount of lean chicken breast and marinade it and eat it with a staple food like rice. And through all of this, you'll be healthier because college food is basically buffets. Sadly this is the culprit of the freshmen 15 epidemic. haha. Good luck.

  3. I agree with you it is probably cheaper for you to purchase the food and make it.Only trouble is it does end up being a pain. You have to clean up the mess.Make sure you watch sale ads.I am not familair with where you live. But winn dixie runs 10items for 10 dollars on frozen meals and variety of other items and another option is the buy one get one free...

A simple thing i have always made for my kids at college is to buy frozen rolls  let them rise   before you stuff them..i stuff and let rise again for a bit  pepperoni ...to make pepperoni rolls for lunch ..those are easy to put in baggies and snack on if you have classes during the day and cant make it home.I know at times we worry if something has mayo on it if it will be good or not.

Kmart and variety of other stores offer 5 boxes of cereal for 10 bucks thats a wonderful deal also...

publix is offering gallons of milk for 3.79...for a while they said in their ads today...cant find it cheaper around here.

You just will not have the variety you had on campus..and another thing you have to worry over tremendously is having roomies who eat your food.a lot of times certain people do not plan and tend to BUM food off the people who do have it stored up!!

good luck hon seems as though you do have it well planned out.
