  1. If you got knocked out with trips, there are two possibilities: Either you get too excited about big hands and ignore the other possible hands on the board, or you were simply unlucky. Losing with trips is not usually bad playing, it's just bad luck. If you don't think he has a straight, then go for it. Sometimes your gut is wrong, and that's just how it goes. But always look for those better hand possibilities and weigh them against your hand.

The best reading advice I can give is just to pay attention to what YOU do in similar circumstances. If you have a strong hand, are you going to act strong? Probably not. If you're bluffing, are you gonna try to act like you have a weak hand? Probably not. Everyone has different tells, but for the most part, focus on how you act when you bluff, or when you have a good hand, and then see if they're doing it.

  2. First thing you need to think about is that big pots are for big hands!

Second you probably need tighten up your starting hands so you don`t get in so much trouble after the flop!

As for getting a read on your friends there really isn`t a fast answer, you just need to pay careful attention and see how they play. Try to identify the loose players from the tight ones as a start. If someone is to loose, just wait for quality hands and isolate them with preflop raises. And after the flop just value bet your good hands and they will pay you off.
