My family and I are going to stay in Nasr city, Cairo egypt for 6- 7 months. From SEptember to February. Weve never been there. I am semi disabled and will have a walker to walk, but cannot walk to much. We also want to have lots of fun and things to do so any advice on getting around inexpensively throughout egypt daily, what the grocery stores are like? How to dress? Walk, bus, train, or get a car? is there night life? Fun things to do there for a family with young children? Is there a movie theatre to watch the latest America movies in english? Bowling? Golf? Beaches to safely swim in? Is the water okay to drink, or should we stick to bottled waters? Where to go considering I am disabled with a walker and wheelchair? I am mainly concerned about what we can do and how to get there because im not sure if its safe to walk or drive or what?

  1. I live in Nasr City too

here are some replies ... hope you find them helpful

Weve never been there. I am semi disabled and will have a walker to walk,

"Our building has a ramp beside the stairs which you can rarely find in buildings AND there is an available furnished apartment if this could help"

what the grocery stores are like?

Small markets almost in every other building and 3 to 4 Hyper markets in the area

    How to dress?

Nasr city is considered a classy district so no problem with dresses but ,in general ,  try to avoid revealing clothes and deep V's ...

Walk, bus, train, or get a car?

Though the area is well served by all means of transportation it would be hard to depend on puplic buses .Caps or rent a car would be a good solution...

is there night life? Fun things to do there for a family with young children?

In the area , Wonder Land , a small fair ground , City Stars a hyper mega shopping mall with everything inside , Cinemas , fast food restaurants , kids places , Bowling , Pool ,

    Beaches to safely swim in?

No beaches , maybe temporar membership  to any club (need a member recommendation) to use the swimming pool (know someone who can help with this)

Is the water okay to drink, or should we stick to bottled waters?

The Water is fine but in the very beginning you might won't adapted to it so start with mineral water till you get used to tap water

Again , if yo need any help plz let me know

    Regards

  2. Hey Nani,

I live in Nasr City too and it is a very crowded place, but so is all of Cairo. Actually you will come near the end of the summer holidays cos school in Egypt start by mid September, the weather will be warm but it will get cooler by the begining of December.

Forget about buses... noway will you be able to use one, you need to rent a car. There is no GPS in Egypt so i would suggest also that you hire a driver to stay with you throughout yr visit or you can always call a private cab, but then again they are always busy and you have to book them at least a day in advance.

There are 2 types of grocery stores, the ones in the street and those are a lot in Nasr city or the shopping centers like carffeour, metro and spinneys they are also available. (One piece of advice though  is to get the phone number of a nearby store and ask them to get you all yr needs..... everything in Egypt can be delivered to yr place u don't have to go down and get anything even the medication).

You can dress anyway you like just try to avoid skimpy clothes or too revealing outfit cos you will get a lot of stares. You will be drinking bottled water but we use tap water for everything else, cooking, washing up.... it is very clean. Don't worry about that.

The night life and places to visit.... wow there are a lot of things to be done, for the children there are 2 large amusement parks Dreamland and Media Production city.... you could also go shopping there are City center and City Star and Genina Mall all these are in Nasr City area and you will find in each center more than 7 cinemas with the latest movies to choose from.

Other sightseeing, you have to see the pyramids, khan el kahlily, the Egyptian museum, Al Azhar park.... and many other recreational places in Egypt. Try to spend each weekend somewhere new so you ll see them all.

The beaches..... the nearest is Al Ain El Sokhna, the water is calm and clear and great for swimming and fishing... you also MUST try to spend at least a week in Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada.... you will enjoy diving, snorkeling, swimming, fishing, you name it.

As for getting around with a walker or a wheelchair, i am sorry to say that the streets in Egypt are not really well planned there are no slides on pavements and the street itself is not well paved. Still all the places i wrote are OK, you will not have problem there.

Enjoy yr time and make happy memories.

    Hope i helped.

  3. the weather will be warm in September and October .

it will get cooler in November , and cold in December , January and February .

so bring summer and winter clothes with you .

to get around easily , you will take a taxi .

bargain with the driver before you get on it .

go to City Stars in Nasr City to watch American movies .

go to WJ Marriott in  Qatamiya for playing golf .

there are buses , but v crowded .

    there are no trains .

you will have to drink bottled water and brush your teeth with it , too.

the beaches are far , but Marriott has a swimming pool .

you wouldnt be allowed to drive , but you can go everywhere in your wheelchair .

    have a nice stay .
