Need Affordable Vacation Ideas for Fiance's 30th Birthday?

I live in Chicago and I have decided to start planning a surprise vacation for my fiance's 30th birthday. His birthday is in June as is our anniversary (we met a week before his birthday) but I have no idea where to take him.

He loves music, hip hop in particular and He's never been anywhere as an adult. I know he'd be interested in Las Vegas, New York City, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Miama, and Orlando, however since I am paying for it all (its a surprise remember) I don't wanna go broke.

I am hoping for a vacation of 4-5 days and dont mind paying for airfare as well. My budget is about $1750 for everything including food, activities and drinks. I don't know if that will be enough for the plane and hotel as well.

If anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it. I don't want any where that is cold and please be descriptive in the activities provided in what ever location you suggest. Thank you

  2. UK answer: We stayed at 'The Suites' at Key Largo some years back [Best Western] we were offered a discount without asking for it - ask and ye shall get!!!  There was a fabulous restaurant called Coconuts which we used to walk to - passed the original 'African Queen' from the film on the way.  You can also take a trip along the Keys as far as you want - but don't try walking anywhere except Coconuts - I don't think it's safe.

The Suites were like a town house with all facilities [about 3 TVs] 2 baths, fabulous decor and an open plan garage under the house.  It also had a small swimming pool.  Mosquito nets were fitted everywhere so no problems there.  Recommended, reasonable price and easy to get to from Miami by car hire.  You can also go for a trip on the Everglades, Sea Fishing, Swimming with dolphins - lots to visit.  Have a nice time.

  3. Vegas would be a great trip for his 30th.  I took my husband as a surprise for his 40th.  It could be well within your budget too.  Since you live in a hub city, you should be able to get a decent price on a  flight, maybe even one without any layovers.  Call a few different hotels (after checking them out online) and see whether you can get better fares over the weekend or during the week.  One is better than the other but I forget which.  Try to stay someplace centrally located, like Caesar's Palace or Treasure Island.  They're in the heart of the hotels so it's easy to walk to all of them, which is how we spent our time.  If they're too expensive, check out some of the older ones that are centrally located, like Bali's.  The beauty of Vegas is that you can eat pretty cheaply.  Much more so than NYC, another one of my favorites--but too expensive.  There are buffets all over and meal "deals."  You'll be handed "coupons" where ever you go.  The big shows are very expensive but we went to some of the cheapest shows and they were great too!  I think you could easily stay within your budget and have a grand time!  For something a little different, you could plan a day trip to the Grand Canyon or Hoover's Dam.  Have fun!
