I need to get a CA drivers license for work (driving an ambulance), but I need to keep my maryland residency/license for legal reasons/school. I will only be here a year, then I move back east. Can I get the CA license without giving up my MD residency?

  1. As a Marylander, I know you cannot hold two licenses from two different states. Being away a year negates your "residency" here in MD also.

  2. No, you have to be licenced in the state you are resident.  There are exceptions.  If you are out of state going to school, you can normally retain your home licence so long as you are a student.  If you are military posted in another state, you normally have the option of retaining your home licence.  Neither of those apply to you.

  3. No, sorry.  You can only have a license if you are a resident of the state, and it you keep your MD license and residency you can't also have a CA license.
