I have a 4x4 post that i need to to take a 1inch by 1/2inch cut from a corner. It has to be 3ft Tall.

What is the best tool for the job? A router or Circular saw? Can i set a circular saw for a 1inch cut into the post. Then set it for a 1/2inch and meet the 1inch one? Taking out a corner.

I have two 4x4 beams that are 35.5inches wide and i need to put a 36inch window in it. The Window only has to go to a deepth of 1inch and 1/2inch wide. I wouldnt normally do this, but we want all the windows to match, If i cant get them in we have to order specialty windows, Almost 3 times the amount for the ones we want.....

Any Help??

Thanks

Matt

  1. You should be able to do it fairly easily using a rip guide for your saw and by adjusting the blade depth as you said.  Lowes sells a really nice rip guide that can be adjusted to fit most circular saws.  I bought one a month ago and have used it several times since then.

  2. If you use a circular saw it might not have enough room to complete the cut and you will have to do some hand chiseling to finish. If you go with the router make sure  it has enough room to be flat to the surface. Also buy one that has a  1/2 arbor. You wont be sorry.

  3. yes, the circular saw is the best tool for that job, set the depth and make several passes, about 1" apart, when done, use a chisel to clean out the notch...

  4. You can do it as you describe with the circular saw, but it will be a little overkill and more work.

Can you use a 1/2 inch thick piece of solid work added to one of the beams? Or a couple of 1/4 inch triplay over the two beams?

The use of fillers to adapt to a certain measure is well know.
