  1. In 1903, the military used 220 grn .30 caliber rifle called the .30-03 (03; 1903 year), used till 1906. In 1906 the 30-03 was replaced by the new 150 grn. .30 caliber military rifle, the Springfield 30-06 (06; 1906 year), great military rifle and hunting rifle. In 1949-1952, the military wanted a new rifle, they worked on the new .30-80 WCF rifle, in 1952 released to the public the new .308. The .308 became the number 1 military and police sniper weapon, but good only for good sized deer. Remington in 1962 made a hunting rifle called a 7mm Rem. Mag. (.284 caliber) superior to the 30-06 and .308 in ballistics. 1980 Remington used the idea of using a .308 cartridge but changing the bullet size from .30 caliber to .284 (7mm) caliber, therefore the 7mm-08. Since the 7mm-08 is based on the .308, they are both good for up to good sized deer.

  2. I've bought three for various family members, and they all like the caliber too much to let me borrow one back.

If there were such a thing as the perfect deer cartridge, it would be a strong candidate. Odd in a way, because that wasn't its design purpose. It originated to knock down metallic rams at 500 meters, where it slightly outperforms its parent, the 308 Winchester.

It's hard to find factory loads except in the 139-150 grain bullet weights. But it's the ballistic twin of the 7x57 Mauser, which has a sterling reputation as both a hunting and military round. WDM Bell killed hundreds of elephants with the little Mauser, so one does have to chuckle when people say they need more gun for deer.

  3. 7mm-08 is a .308 case necked down to take 7mm bullets. Bullets in the 120-150grain range are prefered and probably best suited for deer and other mid-sized game.

It generally shoots a little flatter than the .308 because of the lighter bullets and faster velocity.

I wouldn't hesitate to use it on deer, antelope, coyotes, ect. Probably not the best choice for bigger game but it has been used. Use it with confidence on deer.

  4. 7 mm is about 30 cal... there r many cartrages for it from about 100 to 200 grain...the 150 to 180 s are best compromise fir stopping power and lower recoil...its a good deer killer..look it up in wicopedia...under 7mm 08

  5. It's a great deer gun- read John de witt's answer - it's a little lesson in the history of the 7mm-08- interesting stuff. And I thought I was the only one that ever read about the adventures of Mr. Bell.

  6. 7mm-08 is a fantastic deer cartridge. What kind of details do you want to know? Velocities? Bullet weights? It will kill deer at longer distances than I care to shoot at.

Here is a nice ballistics chart to look at with the different bullet weights listed.
