My almost 3 year old son has been getting mysterious bruises on his face and head, which were first noticed about 2 weeks ago. He sleeps on the bottom bunk of bunk beds, so I thought maybe he was hitting his head on the ladder. I switched the end he sleeps at, and the bruises went away, slowly. About a week ago he developed a bruise right in the middle of his cheek, and it has not cleared up, only looks bigger and worse. Yesterday we also noticed a petechial rash covering his eyes and forehead, as well as under his hair on his head, and down the back of his neck. We seen the dr. yesterday and she sent him to the hospital for bloodwork, but said all came back okay, including platelet count. What could be causing this rash/bruising? He has not had any fever, and is acting normal, other than a decrease in appetite. It seems to be spreading, and I'm just wondering what could be causing it, and what I should do? Thanks so much.

  1. There is nothing wrong with getting a second opinion.  It could be something as simple as an allergy, but it could also be something as serious as meningitis.  Tests aren't always accurate, as it is humans in the end that determine the results.  Please get a second opinion.

  2. go to a different doctor.  make a list of anything in your house that has changed recently.  ex. soap, shampoo, laundry soap........

make another list of anything different that he does, ex. loss of appetite.   take all of this to the new doctor.

good luck I hope everything turns out ok.
