A grade 11 biology student has prepared an experiment to demonstrate the effect of different factors on osmosis to the class.A potato cube is placed in a beaker filled with hot salt water and another potato cube is placed in a beaker filled with cold salt water.

a.What observations would hiclassmatesss record about the differencess in size between the two potato cubes?

b.How wouclassmatestess explain the effects of temperature and concentration on osmosis based on his demonstration?

c.How would his classmates classify the hot saltwater solution: isotonic, hypotonic, hypertonic?

Thanks

  1. a.  The cube in the hot salt water should lose water quicker since heat speeds up diffusion.

    b.  Heat speeds up the molecular movement of the water and the concentration of water will increase outside the potato.

    c.  hypertonic.

  2. Adding to ATP-man's.

You can dissolve more salt in hot water than you can cold. This would increase the solute concentration in the water and would contribute to the speed the cube looses water.

If kept at these temperatures, and assuming that the water was saturated with salt in both solutions, the cube in the hot water would loose more water than that of the cube in the cold water. This is because, as I mentioned, hot water has the capacity of 'holding' more dissolved salt. So in order to attain equilibrium the cube would have to loose more water.
