You are confused about your Marys!  Mary I of England was Elizabeth I's sister not Mary, Queen of Scots.  Mary, Queen of Scots was their cousin.  It was through the scottish mary, who was executed for treason by order of Elizabeth, that James VI of Scotland became James I of England after Elizabeth's death.
