Question:

Need Legal Advice - What do I ask the lawyer?

So I'm wanted in another state, for not attending mandatory court date for a speeding over 80 on the interstate. The court date was over 6 months ago, and I know I need to speak with a lawyer or two to get myself good in the books again, and it will take time.

What do I need to ask the lawyer to do for me (please don't stop at the first step - list EVERYTHING) so I don't sound like a bumbling idiot?

I know it will be pricey, but what is an acceptional price range for these services, and what is just over the top rediculous? (It's in the state of North Carolina.)

Thank you in advance.

  1. Tell them the truth, why you let this go for so long. They are working for you, they do not care if you are a bumbling idiot, as long as you can pay your bill.

  2. Call the department where you got your speeding ticket.  You probably have a warrant for you arrest.  Tell them where you got the ticket and your information...basically:  who, what where, when and why.  They should be able to handle it from there.  They'll give you your warrant/ticket information and you can give that to your attorney.Your attorney nor will else be able to access your warrant information.

  3. For a speeding ticket I would not even bother with an attorney. I would call the court in SC, tell them that you missed your court date and that you are out of state. They really tend to work with you when you are out of state. The bail for a missed ticket is generally equivilent to the amount of the fine plus court costs. It is very likely that if you contact the court you might not even have to make a court appearance. If you are required to make an appearance than there is nothing that an attorney will be able to do for you.

If it was a serious crime I would tell you to get an attorney but for missing court on a speeding ticket I would not even bother. Call the court and ask them if you do a trial by declaration. That way you can simply mail in a statement as to why you don't think you were guilty of the speeding ticket. That is the easiest way to start this process.

  4. Everything schneider said. But you should get a North Carolina traffic lawyer. She or he will know the laws of that State best.

  5. If the warrant is just for speeding itself you don't need an attorney. All you half to do is turn yourself in ( Yes ) you will be arrested, but to get out you simply pay the fines. Don't spend more money then you need too.  Good Luck !
