Need Travel Help. Winnipeg or Thunder Bay?

My friend and I are taking a long weekend trip, stopping in St Paul, MN and would like to head up to Canada for a couple days. We are thinking of Winnipeg or Thunder Bay. Thunder Bay seems to have the must scenic places. I really wasn't able to find much in Winnipeg except the usual zoo, museum, etc... Anyone have any ideas?

  1. That's an awful long way to go for a weekend trip from St.Paul ( 6 to 8 hours of driving for either).  You'd be better off just heading a couple of hours North of the city.

If you head to Thunder Bay or Winnipeg, you'll be disappointed.  They're both pretty crappy vacation spots.  I've been to both a zillion times on business and wouldn't recommend going to either unless you had to.  As a Canadian that has travelled almost the entire country, I can tell you that those two spots are definitely in the top 5 of worst places to go in Canada for a vacation.

Minnesota's beautiful.  Why are you looking for anything beyond?

  2. In Winnipeg, you could go the Forks and eat some cool food.  With any luck, their Folk Festival will be going on while you are there.  THe Peg has a pretty good theatre district.  The WInnipeg Zoo is pretty cool, and I think it's only $2 -- and, of course, is the 'birthplace' of Winnie the Pooh. Betcha didn't know that ;)

Thunder Bay would be your choice if you wanted to enjoy wilderness.  Lots of great climbing spots, hiking, etc.  Old Fort William could be interesting for someone who's never been there before.

If i had to choose between the two, I would choose Winnipeg

  3. Of the two I would pick Thunder Bay as the best one.  It is on the Lake, very scenic.  If you love the woods and wide opens spaces and hiking and seeing wild life that is the place to go.  Winnipeg on the other hand is a nice city, got a Casino or two but sort of in the middle of now where.  There is a provincial park not too far out of the city...Birds Hill I think if you like nature that may be a drawing point.

  4. I think you would like to come to Winnipeg. We have so many wonderful places to see, clubs, scenic areas. So what age are you guys? This can help, there are a few night clubs that you may like but if you are interested in other things here is a few things you may like to also see, they are a few things I like to do....

If you are wondering about the scenic things there is...

    -The Forks ( www.theforks.com )

-Folklorama, this is a great way to see all the wonderful cultures of Winnipeg, I would like to recommend the Scottish Pavilion. If you come into Winnipeg go to the closest Liquor Mart and get a flyer for all the pavilions there are ( www.folklorama.ca ),

-Check out a Bomber game... may not be as big as a collage football team but it is one heck of a good time ( www.bluebombers.com )

-The zoo is fun to see, go on a average temp. day they will want to come out of there homes a little more ( www.winnipeg.ca/cms/ape/zoo )

    -Some of the museum's ( www.manitobamuseum.ca )

-One of our wonderful casinos, our little take on Vegas ( www.casinosofwinnipeg.com )

I do hope you decide on coming to Winnipeg, there are a lot of things to see. Also the drive to Thunder Bay will take up most of your weekend

(You may need to copy and paste the web sites to see them, still new to computers, LOL)

  5. Thunder Bay has.. Terry Fox Monument, amethyst and agate mines, Hillcrest Park, Old Fort William, Intercity Shopping Centre, the CLE is starting today (Aug 6th) and running until the.... 10th I believe, you missed the Italian Fest by a couple of days, you might be able to see a production at Magnus Theater. Check out Chippewa and Centennial Park too.

To be honest, I'd choose Winnipeg. There's a lot more to do there.
