Need Xbox 360 live to play?

I'm getting a 360 in a few weeks, but I need to know if I need Xbox 360 live to play any game marked as that(Oblivion, Darkness etc.)

P.S. I have dialup so don't how to get 360 live.

No, you can play any game in single player mode.  To my knowledge, I can only think of Unreal Tournament that will not have some single player focus, and even that will be great with friends.

Also, you cannot use XBOX L!VE with a dial-up connection.  Unfortunately this would ruin everyone else's experience, not to mention your own.
