  1. I would come to see if the toilets actually flush in the counter clockwise direction.... lol. And of course the beaches, hot weather, surfing, delicious wine, kangaroos and koala bears.

I thought that we had the same holidays..... I would assume that Canadians and Australians get along, Canadians are friendly and like everyone!

  2. Rough and tough. Still behind the times.  Harshness. Friendliness.  Not into yourself like the U.S. is.  Maybe because you were part of the commonwealth.  Don't really know.  I just knew it wasn't going to be as commercialized. Fresh air, not a ton of people and lots of open space is why I went...and the beer.

  3. If it was something I was doing, it would be for the adventure - seeing new places, new things, meeting new people, seeing different wild animals in their natural settings. I am also a history buff and Australia has some pretty interesting history. There is the added fact that if I work it right, I can avoid winter if I want to. There are things that are unique to the southern hemisphere that I will never see if I stay here in the northern hemisphere - like the southern skies at night.(I know cause I have been and seen them already). Tour operators never mention this but it is quite a sight to see on a clear dark night. There are also new foods to try. It is just a totally different and awesome adventure to travel anywhere but it's even better when it is somewhere so totally different to Canada. I would think Australians would come here for a similar reason.

I am way too fond of my own country to emigrate but if I had to, I would look at Australia because of the things we have in common - UK heritage. Things such as language, democracy, similar legal system and the like.

I just saw your additions - sell your country like you were a tour operator. What a fantastic job! And Canadians and Australians get along famously.

And Tiffany's right - we love your accent and the way you call others "mate". So Australian!

  4. My grandma and mum are Australian and I've been there a couple times.  I would go there for the same reason I would go to Mexico. Hot Weather. And I like visiting new countries, looking around visiting the sites and cities. Things that are unique to Australia or that we don't have here, like Kangaroos and Koalas etc. You can ask me more questions if you like:

  5. I think that ever since the movie Crocodile Dundee came out in the mid-80's, Canadians have been interested in all things Aussie. The late Steve Irwin was also big entertainment here, with the Crocodile Hunter show being seen five days a week on various channels.

So we are interested in the Aussie laid-back lifestyle, the ruggedness of the country, the culture with the aborigines, and the climate.

There are a few drawbacks that you would have to deal with as a travel agent or ambassador for Australian travel getaways.

First, the flights. There are no direct flights from Canadian cities to Australian destinations. I tried Vancouver and Toronto, two of our biggest hubs. Qantas does fly from Toronto to Chicago and then on to Australia, but nothing direct.

Next, travel time. Flying from Los Angeles to Australia is about 17 hours, so a Canadian flying from any city other than Vancouver would have to add another 3-5 hours on that time!

Now factor in cost of flight. The cheapest price I saw was US$1500 from LAX to Melbourne. Some are as high as US$2500.

When you compare the availability of flights, costs, and travel time to get to Australia as compared to flying for vacation to Cuba, Florida or Mexico, most Canadians can afford an all expenses paid two-week vacation to those warm resorts for the same price they would pay for a flight to Australia, and they do not lose two days in travel time!

I wish it were less time and less expensive to get to Sydney or Melbourne, as I would love to visit your country some day. Perhaps when I am retired and choose to go on vacation without the limitations of a two week vacation period each year.

    Hope this helps!

  6. I go to Australia to visit my brother and his family in Perth.  They have been living there for almost 20 years.  I love the beaches and the vineyards.

  7. It would be a tough sell for me. There's nothing really that interests me in Australia, other than the reef, but I can visit a barrier reef in a 5 hour flight time from here in Belize. This is all just personal opinion and being honest about it. It doesn't reflect what may be a majority Canadian point of view. I've also travelled completely around the planet, so a far away destination isn't going to be the reason I want to go there. There has to be some other type of "hook". I'm not a sun and fun type, so beaches don't appeal to me unless it's a way to get past the surfline to dive.

History? That's something, but like our own history, it's rather recent. I enjoy older. The UK or Egypt for example. I'd go back to both places in a heartbeat because of that history.

  8. Hi there,

I am both Canadian and Australian citizenship, and have lived in each country for over 10 yrs.

    Ask away!

Some main points why a Canadian may want to come to Australia, is that it is a very similar in lifestyle... The bonus with Australia is that you have the amazing hot weather.  Canadians also seem to be a little obsessive of Aussie accents... for some reason.

Any questions you have, I'd be glad t answer!
