Question:

Need a HD Camcorder?

Not MiniDV, because I have had some bad experiences with those. Something you can easily transfer from the camcorder onto your computer, it doesn't matter if it uses flash memory or DVD or whatever they have these days. Would like it to be a high definition camera under $1,500. Not too bulky either, I don't need professional camcorders with the mic on the outside, just something for home movies.

  1. There are a multitude of consumer level camcorders for under $1,500 that aren't miniDV.

*** Do understand that all camcorders with hard drives, flash memory, or Blueray miniDVD storage record in the AVCHD, H.264, or MPEG-4 format (and sometimes in a combination of one or more).  All of these formats compress your video signal so tightly (Much, MUCH tighter than miniDV or HDV), that you will notice some quality loss; however most home video users don't mind.  You may be able to adjust the compression rate on some camcorders, but most do not allow it.

Try the Hitachi DZ-BD7HAF BluRay 5.3MP DVD Hybrid High Definition Camcorder with 30GB Hard Drive and 10x Optical Zoom http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00159J...

This Hybrid system has BOTH a hard drive AND a Blu-Ray miniDVD system.  The best practice for this type of camcorder is to always record to hard drive.  Once the hard drive is filled, you can either transfer to BR miniDVDs or capture to your computer.

If this camcorder does not suit you, shop around anywhere.  Almost every consumer level camcorder is under $1,250.    You will find as many different options and features in many combinations - too many to address here.

    Good Luck!
