  1. I would go for the Gateway M-1629 Notebook

M-1629 Garnet Red. I like the specs for long term and price. Lot of memory, fast processor, and webcam will last your four years.

  2. The most popular model right now is the 2.4GHz MacBook. You can get it on Apple.com. Go to http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/ed... to get your student discount.

  3. I feel it really depends on your needs and budget.  It's a vast market, so shopping around (big stores and small PC repair stores) and waiting for the right sale season to come around should be a nice idea.  Try to get the most (RAM upto 4GB, HDD upto 250GB, Processor Intel Core 2 series or AMD X2 series, atleast 15.4" LCD, etc.) for your money.  Different people will give you different opinions about brands of laptop, but it's really personal experiences.  So far I've owned 5 or 6 Dells working just fine, whereas I've met people who literally hate Dells.  So, good luck and feel free to ask any specific questions.
