Need a brassy, vivacious, and character-filled alto song?

My school’s musical is auditioning in the fall, and I REALLY REALLY REALLY want a part. As a matter of fact, I’m shooting for the Mrs.Pennywise part in Urinetown.

So, I have to WOW them.

So, can you please suggest a lovely alto-voiced (preferably broadway) tune that I can achieve. Not too low, and not too high either. But my voice IS pretty flexible.

  1. A lovely alto voice?? Hmm....that's a toughie...I have the same problem, I'm looking for a song too for a show I'm doing. Well, I know this one isn't so brassy, vivacious, but, I know it's character-filled and an alto song!!! It's called The Dark I Know Well from Spring Awakening. It's really a rock song, but, it's suitable for your voice. You could possibly do Ilse's part, but, that's more 2nd soprano, so, I'd suggest doing Martha's part. I know it's not really the song to use, but, maybe give it a chance. Who knows??

  2. I would not suggest a "lovely" alto song. Pennywise is not a "lovely" part and doesn't sing "lovely" song. You want something more like your top description - brassy and full of personality.

    I suggest either

Surabaya Santa - Songs for a New World

Pirate Jenny - The Threepenny Opera

The music for Threepenny Opera is by Kurt Weil and Surabaya Santa is based on another Weil song (Surabaya Santa). His stuff tends to be dark, dramatic, passionate and very german sounding lol

Urinetown takes a lot of music influences, Weil being one of them, so either of the above songs would be great for Penny. Both songs will also allow you to show a lot of sass and character.

  3. based on what i am reading i would have to say you probably have a voice like me, mezzo soprano. so anything from AIDA is great..."every story is a love story" the last like 60 seconds. of the song is GREAT and if you can belt those notes then it would totally wow them. other choices are defying gravity the end (ONLY IF YOU CAN BELT THEM), umm...No Bad News from The WIZ, but if you want a song that is slower then I dreamed a dream from Les Mis is GREAT! hope you get what you want =]

  4. Black coffee  - Great song.

  5. Days of plenty- little women

it is the m ost beautiful alto song i have ever heard  and if your voice has power you should be able to nail it

they have some videos on youtube but i think you should lean from the original

  6. "My Strongest Suit" from Aida.

    Or anything from Chicago.
