Please suggest a brand or model if you have experience with one you like just for videoing kids, nothing fancy

  1. MiniDV camcorders record to magnetic tape - there's no way to play them in a DVD player.  Mini-DVDs can be played if the disk's been finalised in the camcorder.  Mini-DVD camcorders are great in theory, but in practice they don't deliver.  MiniDV, on the other hand is cheap, robust, tried and tested and you can keep the tapes for years and embarrass the kids when they're grown up.

  2. I know there is a way to view the mini dvd's in a regular dvd player, but Im not sure how.  However...try this: FLIP. Its kind of new. Go to  www.flip.com. I saw it on Oprah and bought it. It's awesome. Its a small camcorder with no dvd or cassette. It just has a memory card and plugs directly into your computer, then you can burn it to a dvd, or send in an email or myspace etc. immediately. You can also plug it in directly onto your tv!
