Need a cheap way to get to Costa Rica?

Question

My family and I want to go back to Costa Rica next summer for a couple of months. We're teachers so we have lots of time and little money.

I can't afford the nearly $3,000 it takes to fly there and back.

Does anyone know a cheaper way to go, even if it is slow. I can be very flexible about departure and arrival dates and times.

I've heard of booking passage on cargo ships. Know anything about that?

Oh, 2 adults and 2 kids traveling fom Texas, if that matters.
