I am looking for a comprehensive list of starter groceries. I would like to give a box to a friend who is moving into an apartment and has no food at all yet. Is there a good website someone knows of or does someone think they could come up with a very thorough list?

  1. First question? does your mate prefer to cook from scratch or convenience foods?

    Basic items in MY pantry:

Condiments: olive oil, wine vinegar, soy sauce, chilli sauce, tomato sauce, salt, pepper, mixed herbs, chilli powder, jam, peanut butter, vegemite, coffee/tea

Dry goods: flour (SR and plain), rice, red lentils, pasta (spaghetti & spirals), rice noodles, sugar

Tinned: tomatoes, white beans, corn, baked beans, tuna, salmon

Bottles: pasta sauce, stir fry sauces, curry paste, pesto

Fresh items: milk, eggs, butter/marg, cheese, bread

Vege: onions, carrots, potatoes - these last a long time (for veg), and are pretty basic items, add some greens like beans or brocolli if your mate enjoys lots of fresh veg.

If they prefer convenience foods, add some 2-min noodles and pasta-in-sauce packets or tinned meals.

And don't forget cleaning goods: dish washing liquid, tea towels, spray & wipe, loo cleaner, paper towels, sponges etc.

    I hope this helps

p.s. Great idea - your friend is lucky to have you :)
