Need a controversial issue for my research essay?

Question

I need a controversial topic in the US for an essay I'm writing in my AP English class.

Not something overdone.. abortion, global warming, etc. no thanks.

I'm interesting in medicine.. so I'd like a topic on that. I also would like to write about something in the retail/fashion industry..consumer stuff.. things like that.

I'm open to any ideas you have, but it should be something that would have books and periodicals available about it.

Please help! I'm having a hard time looking for ideas.

The overuse of emergency rooms because do not have adequate access to regular healthcare is a big issue.  We are spending healthcare dollars very inefficiently when we allow this to happen.  However, do you let poor people die at the ER door?  It's a subset but very important part of the argument for universal healthcare.

As far as the retail/fashion industry and consumer "stuff," you could look into the whole idea of "s*x sells." The models who are shown in ads in magazines and tv and everywhere else have been touched up with programs like photoshop. Is that right? What kind of message is it sending? What is its effect on femeninity in our society? Do some of them go too far?
