Question:

Need a great color to paint the kitchen, but...

The cabinets are old and ugly light tan, fake wood. When we moved in, I painted a deep barn red behind it and it looks great! Now that we've lived here awhile, I'd like a color closer to taupe or clay, maybe a little green in it. Would that match well? Should I match the color to the light color in the cabinets? I would like a more contemporary spin.

  1. Paint the cabinets. They're fake wood anyway. You said that they were an ugly color. Go ahead and paint them. When I moved into my house, the former owner had painted them white. When I opened some of the cabinets, I could see some of the original, fake wood coming through. I'm really glad she painted them.

Fake wood will definitely make your kitchen look dated. You will need to prime the cabinets, more than likely. Other than that, the colors you suggested are pretty neutral, so I think they will match.

  2. I would definitely go with a taupe color.  I currently have off white cabinets myself, black/stainless steel appliances, and hardwood flooring.  The taupe wall color will bring it all together.  Also change out the cabinet hardware to complete your makeover.  That will definitely give it that contemporary flare you were looking for.

  3. i was going to say that a light tan color and a dark green with some gold trim would look great, but then you said you wanted contemporary. i would say do something different and maybe paint everything white first, then do some black trim or maybe silver. silver is a very contemporary color, plus it goes with white, like your appliances.

  5. The "coffee" colours are very popular these days like cappuchino or mocha....you know the lightish brown or darker cream like colours...and I am spelling "color" right it is the BRITISH or CANADIAN way to spell it......good luck

  7. paint your cabinets too... won't do you any good to just paint the wall if they are that unattractive. Give your cabinets a light sanding and prime (since they are probably laminate) then paint. Add new handles. Your walls and cabinet colors should compliment each other.
